I really hate to write this. I wanted this to be a better experience. I'll start with the good: They were super friendly. That earned them a second star, and also makes this much harder to write. The bad: prices seemed a little high. I know bbq isn't cheap to make, but when the prices are on par with places like Joes KC BBQ, I'm going to expect some pretty decent grub. The corn was ok. The fries were pretty soggy, but their flavor was ok. The coleslaw seemed like a pretty standard cabbage/vinegar/mayo/sugar mix. The ugly: The ribs. They looked great, but that was as far as the excitement went. To start with, they didn't smell like smoked meat... they smelled like a campfire of scrub wood found at a campsite. There was no "fall off the bone" to them. It was work to tear the meat off the bones. I don't expect to need a steak knife to eat ribs. We ordered a full slab and didn't even eat half of it. I'd like to say that maybe they were just having an off day, that I'll go back and try it again, maybe try something different and see if it gets better. But I'll be honest... I'm going to just forget it's there.

I was disappointed but maybe it's because my expectations were for something different. It's a lunch counter. The food was good but it definitely is not a dinner place. It's the end of the strip mall. This would be a good place to go for lunch but unless you're just looking for something quick try someplace else for dinner

I consider myself a connoisseur of BBQ having lived in KC all my life and eating it consistently for 40 years. Fireside BBQ is very good! I'm a burnt ends type of BBQ eater, so I judge most places by that. Then, if the sides are good, all the more power to a place. I put Jack Stack as the gold standard for all-around bbq and sides, and Brobecks on the other end of the spectrum with amazing ribs and the worst sides you'll ever have at a BBQ joint. The burnt ends here are fantastic, and maybe the best in the city. Hard to say now with so many good ones like Jack Stack, Q39, CharBar, Jon Russell's. It's really hard to strike the perfect balance of crunchy burnt exterior and tender interior, and I think Fireside hits this balance as best as I've ever had. Well seasoned and very nice smoke flavor. Point is that I'd put them up there with the best. I have also had the pulled pork, and it's probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite in the city to Joe's KC and Danny Edwards. I've only had the cheesy corn and fries, but both our very solid sides.. Very few places have good cheesy corn. In fact, I only think Jack Stack does it right, but now I think Fireside makes a very respectable second place, and everyone else isn't even close. The fries are crispy and flavorful. The beans look very good, but I've yet to try. Oh, and I got my daughter a burger, and it was amazing! I'll be dropping by to get my burgers here now too. Generous hand-made patty with perfect sear, tender, and smokey flavor! Dare I say best burger in the city? My only complaint, and why I have 4 instead of 5 stars on the place, is they haven't figured out how to service a crowd a yet. I hope this is just a growing pain that will get figured out as traffic gets more predictable. I had to wait quite a while for my meal, but damn the food is worth the wait!

These people will take good care of your BBQ cravings. The brisket is tender with a great smoky taste. The cheesy corn bake has a few bacon bits. Nice touch. Service is very friendly. I also like the fact that they offer various types of sauces although the meat tastes great without it.

I really wanted to enjoy this spot, and had been looking forward to it since it opened. Being that I'm a big Joe's and Brobeck's fan, it appeared from the outside to be somewhere in between. In the end, it's a small business (which is great) that is still trying to figure things out. At 6:30p on a Friday (they close at 7:30pm weekends), they weren't sure if they had a rack of ribs. Someone else had come in behind us and ordered something that they were out of. I get that they are trying to find their bearings, but it kind of stinks to the customer to be out of a main entree. The ribs were St. Louis ribs--large but lots of fat. You get lots of fat with STL, but these seemed to have an extraordinary amount. They were pulled apart already and placed in the to-go container. What they call their own sauce was pretty good, but nothing to write home about. They do have Gates, Jack Stack and other sauces available. They REALLY need to sell Baby backs...that would probably get me back there again. Sides were good-cheesy corn and beans delicious, but as I think back, nothing spectacular that you can't get out of a can of Bushes or Green Giant. Couple suggestions: 1). stay open at least until 8pm on weekdays and weekends. 2). switch to Baby Backs 3). get rid of the "buffet" line in front. That is off-putting. Serve in back and bring it out to the customer and it would be a better overall experience. 4) include wet-wipes at the utensil bar 5) keep selling Lemon Shandy as long as possible. I too want this spot to work, but am concerned about their ability to thrive. They really need to identify something that sets them apart from the rest of the BBQ spots around.

This restaurant just opened in what has always been the corner of death for restaurants. This exact spot has housed so many restaurants that if you combined their menus you would probably have cuisines representing most of the world. As I'm writing this review it may already be a new restaurant specializing in Slovenian horse burgers. The fact that a BBQ joint opened in the BBQ capital got me more excited than all of the past restaurants. I went there for lunch and my first impression was reminiscent to the first and probably only time I walked into a Ponderosa. All of the food was laid out in a sort of buffet and I almost didn't order a thing. I'm not used to being served BBQ that's sitting under heated lamps. Regardless, I wanted to try all they have to offer and got a type of one of everything platter. This included all of their meats, sides and desserts. It was way too much food for me to eat in one sitting, but I was pleased with the generous portions. The ribs were cooked very well, as was the pulled pork and brisket. I also really liked their beans and cheesy corn. I'm a big fan of cole slaw and theirs is at the bottom compared to just about every other BBQ place. The burnt ends were just ok. Overall I enjoyed Fireside, but the consensus in my house was that there is nothing spectacular about any of their menu items. They taste fine and fill you up, but there is nothing extraordinary about them. This place might be a monster hit in a city that doesn't have as many BBQ choices as we do, but overall they fall short of the other KC options. All things considered, I'm still rooting for Fireside and hope that they can position themselves to be the last restaurant to fill this Overland Park black hole.

Growing up in KC made me a BBQ snob, so every time I come back I try to make a trip to Gates and Bryant's. I went to Fireside soon after they opened, so they were super nice. Happy to report they are still that nice, and these days I am making 2 trips to Fireside when I visit KC. Here's why: start with the what not, which is almost everything, and a rack of ribs, which is the only thing missing. This is enough for two people. My friend and I liked everything so much we had to get it again. You just can't go wrong here. The ribs are that perfect not-quite-fall-off-the-bone that makes it easy, and necessary, too get all the meat in your mouth. They suffer the most from reheating, so if you gotta take something home, save the cold sides or burnt ends. Really, you could put any meat and two sides in a cup and love it. That's actually on the menu as a bbq sundae.

I had the cheesy corn and the burnt ends. The cheesy corn was 4 stars and the burnt ends were the best I've ever had anywhere. Will be back very soon.
